Coast Guard Seizes Nearly 10,000 Pounds Of Marijuana Off Baja California |
|
Nov 21, 2008 - 12:37 PM - by User
|
In one of the largest marijuana seizures in U.S. Coast Guard history, a cutter scooped up nearly 10,000 pounds of marijuana thrown overboard by a speedboat off the coast of Baja California earlier this week.
The marijuana, which was wrapped up in 137 steamer-trunk-sized bales, had an estimated street value of $32 million, said Lt. Kristopher Ensley, the commander of the cutter that recovered the drugs.
It was "a huge bust," Ensley said Thursday. "My whole crew is joking that we're the reason a dime bag is now being called a quarter bag."
The cutter Narwhal, based in Newport Beach, was patrolling international waters about 100 miles off the coast of San Diego when it... [Read More]

CA Medical Marijuana Advocates Concerned About Obama Appointments |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 10:44 PM - by Ganjarden
|
In this year’s presidential election, medical marijuana advocates in California were pretty clear on which candidate they were rooting for. On multiple occasions, Democrat Barack Obama has pledged to end the federal raids that have bedeviled the state’s dispensaries for years under the Bush administration.
But some of their relief has turned into concern as the incoming president has begun to consider appointments to key posts. Obama will reportedly appoint two men who have been fierce critics of medical marijuana: Eric Holder, rumored to be Obama’s pick for attorney general, and Donald Vereen as transitional co-chair of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
If confirmed to run the... [Read More]

Can Pot Luck Grow in Ohio? |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 10:24 PM - by Ganjarden
|
Pot luck is the only to explain what would happen if a bill introduced by a Dayton state senator allowing for the medical use of marijuana were passed in the lame duck session of the General Assembly, which has been controlled by Republicans since 1994 but which will be split come January, when Democrats, who won more seats than they lost for the second election in a row, take control of the Ohio House.
Sen. Tom Roberts, a Dayton Democrat who recently lost a bid to lead his minority caucus in the senate, introduced The Medical Cannabis Bill or "Ohio Compassionate Act" (S.B.343), which would allow for medicinal use of cannabis to qualified patients through a regulated systems. If passed, which isn't likely... [Read More]

Herbal Resource Center Dispenses "Compassionate Care" |

Brenda Thomas knew her client needed a more effective painkiller. She was aware that the woman swallowed 150 Vicodin pills each month, and had done so for the better part of 12 years. Recovering from six major back surgeries, the woman was still "delirious with pain," she said, even after downing huge doses of the liver-damaging narcotic. Thomas, a caregiver and at the time a volunteer at a medical marijuana clinic in Medford, she helped the woman become registered in the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP). As is the case for many, marijuana eased the woman's suffering. Since obtaining her medical marijuana permit, she has cut her Vicodin prescription by more than half, Thomas said, requiring only 30 to 60 pills... [Read More]

Too Many Trips By Drug Tourists Strain Dutch Tolerance |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 7:53 PM - by Ganjarden
|
The cannabis-loving clientele of the Liberty II Café are convinced that the latest attempt by authorities to curb their habit will backfire.
Like many Dutch “coffee shops” the Liberty II boasts a wide range of marijuana strains, from Amnesia through K2 to Hollands Glorie, sold openly in joints and small amounts over the counter.
Even though it is tucked away in a side street in the sleepy town of Roosendaal, its location near the southern Dutch border has made it a magnet for drug tourists who arrive in their thousands every week from across northern Europe.
Faced with outrage from residents about rowdy behaviour, Roosendaal’s Mayor, Michel Marijnen, wants to close the town’s four... [Read More]

U.S. Industrial Hemp Development Continues |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 5:27 PM - by Ganjarden
|
Developers and famers continue to pave the way for hemp as a biomass crop in the United States.
The U.S. Appeals Court in St. Paul, Minn., heard arguments Nov. 12 by two North Dakota farmers trying to get a lower court’s dismissal of their suit against a federal agency overturned. David Monson, Osnabrock, N.D., and Wayne Hauge, Ray, N.D., have state approval to grow industrial hemp in North Dakota, but are suing the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to get a federal permit to grow industrial hemp. While a number of states allow hemp research, North Dakota was the only one to allow hemp cultivation until Vermont granted permission earlier this year.
In Massachusetts, a developer sourced the hemp... [Read More]

International research director, conference organizer and scientific journal editor wanted, competitive wage set at $12 an hour.
Victoria's International Hempology 101 Society, the medical marijuana advocacy group best known for its regular Wednesday evening protests in front the Ministry of Health building on Blanshard Street, is looking to raise the level of scientific discourse.
"I guess it's kind of a strategic attempt to help change the laws through science," said society president Leon 'Ted' Smith.
Smith hopes the journal and conferences will lead to better science on "whole-plant" marijuana medications. Most research being published currently tends to focus... [Read More]

It's Just My Opinion |

Albert Einstein is credited with making the observation that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
That’s what the government appears to be doing with the War on Drugs as the nation’s drug problem worsens. The war was launched by U.S. President Nixon in 1971, and after 37 years of increasingly draconian punishment and confiscatory laws, we don’t seem to be any closer to winning. If anything, the problem has gotten worse, much worse.
The Drug War Clock notes the following facts:
The U.S. federal government spent more than $19 billion dollars in 2003 on the War on Drugs, at a rate of about $600 per second … State and local governments... [Read More]

More Than Half Of Dutch Lord Mayors Want To Legalize Cannabis |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 11:57 AM - by User
|
More than half of all Dutch lord mayors with one or more coffeeshops on their territory, want to legalise the entire soft drugs-chain. The lord mayors want to get rid of the "frontdoor - backdoor problem, created by a policy that tolerates the sale of weed, but not the production and delivery.
That is the result of a telephone survey of weekly magazine Binnenlands Bestuur (Domestic Administration) among the 106 municipalities that have one or more coffeeshops.
Only nine in favour of ban
In total 88 lord mayors have expressed themselves: 54 are for a complete legalisation of coffeeshops, 25 want to continue tolerating according to current practice, nine lord mayors are in favour of... [Read More]

Pot Group Sues To Stop DMV From Revoking Licenses |

Nov 20, 2008 - 4:24 AM - by Ganjarden

A medical marijuana advocacy group has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Motor Vehicles for revoking the driver's license of a woman because of her status as a medical pot patient.
Americans for Safe Access sued the department on behalf of 53-year-old Rose Johnson. Her attorneys say she has had a clean driving record for 37 years. The suit claims the DMV refused to renew her license in July because of her status as a medical marijuana patient.
Attorney Joe Elford said the DMV can't "simply disregard" the state's medical marijuana law. His group asserts that similar situations hav | |
